Die Circleculture Gallery zeigt The Disenchantment of the Bourgeoisie,

eine Einzelausstellung des enfant terrible der Berliner Urban Art/ Street Art Szene Anton Unai. Seine großformatigen Installationen kombinieren Malerei, Fotografie, Collage und spontane Performances, um radikal ausgelegt, wahrhaftig romantische, emotionale Landschaften zu erschaffen.

Unais kommende Ausstellung wird beides beinhalten: eine raumgebundene
Installation und neue Einzelwerke. Diese Arbeiten gelten als Konsequenz Unais
letzter großformatiger Aktion in einem ehemaligen Tattoo Store in Berlin Mitte.
Auf 200qm entstand hier nach sechs Wochen künstlerischen Produzierens ein
Labyrinth anarchischer Bilderwelten. Zum Abschluss wurde eines dieser
hedonistisch gelagerten Happenings erschaffen, die, vom Künstler für seine
Vernissagen inszeniert, schon als Legendäre Sozialskulpturen gelten.

Durch die Verwendung von Materialien aus dem öffentlichen urbanen Raum wie simpler Abfall, rostige Metallplatten oder gestrige Zeitungen, wiederbelebt Unais Arbeit verworfene Relikte der modernen Massen. Seine Arbeiten sind grob und zugleich feingeistig. Sie reflektieren eine verletzbare und sentimentale Menschheit anhand gewaltvoller Gesten, provokativer Ironie und chaotischer Kompositionen. Gelernte ästhetische Grenzen werden gesprengt.

Starke Meta-Erzählebenen, pop- und subkulturelle Artefakte, religiöse Ikonographie und eine breite Palette an literarischen Referenzen finden sich in seinen vielseitigen Installationen ein. Auch Anspielungen zu künstlerischen Verwandschaften wie zu Basquiats Urbaner Poetik über Sir Howard Hodgkins abstrakten Malereien als skulpturale Objekte hin zu Jonathan Meeses theatralischem Symbolismus.

Anton Unai wurde 1974 in London geboren und lebte in zahlreichen Ländern, bevor er nach Berlin kam. Seine Arbeiten wurden international ausgestellt und sind zurzeit Teil der Ausstellung The Alternative Philosophy in der Leonard Street Gallery in London. The Disenchantment of the Bourgeoisie ist seine zweite Ausstellung in der Circleculture Gallery.

Circleculture Gallery is pleased to present The Disenchantment of the Bourgeoisie, a solo exhibition by Berlin urban art / street art scene’s enfant terrible Anton Unai, whose large-scale installations combine painting,
photography, collage and impromptu performance to create unapologetically aggressive, yet sincerely romantic, emotional
environments.

The Disenchantment of the Bourgeoisie will include both a site-specific installation and selected works from Unai’s most recent action, in which a former tattoo parlor was transformed into a labyrinth of anarchic imagery, culminating after two weeks of continuous production with an event that was part social sculpture, part happening, part bacchanal.

Using materials that reflect the urban landscape, ordinary detritus like rusty sheet
metal or yesterday’s newspaper, Unai’s work resurrects and reinvents the discarded relics of the modern masses. His art is at once rough and delicate, exposing sentimental and vulnerable humanity through violent gestures,
provocative irony and messy compositions that defy traditional aesthetic boundaries.

Meta-narratives, pop and subculture artifacts, religious iconography and a wide breadth of literary references are all present in his multifaceted installations, as well as allusions to art historical antecedents ranging from
Basquiat’s urban poetry to Sir Howard Hodgkin’s abstract paintings as sculptural
objects to Jonathan Meese’s theatrical symbolism.

Anton Unai was born in 1974 in London and lived in several European countries before moving to Berlin. His work has been exhibited internationally and was recently included in the group exhibition The Alternative Philosophy at the Leonard Street Gallery in London. The Disenchantment of the Bourgeoisie is his
