In 2008, Circle Culture Gallery presented the “Berliner Strasse” group exhibition, held at the BHC Kollektiv—a former cultural center spanning over 1800 sqm in Berlin. The exhibition brought together cutting-edge works by contemporary street culture artists, showcasing the above-average and headstrong artistic talent emerging from Berlin’s young urban art scene. Featured artists included JAYBO, CHARLIE ISOE, DANIEL TAGNO, ANTON UNAI, XOOOOX, MAROK, MYMO, ALEX FLACH, NOMAD, NEON, and EMESS, each presenting groundbreaking works that pushed the boundaries of street art.
Contemporary street art has deep roots in Berlin’s streets. Since the late ’90s, the city’s facades have become both a canvas and a source of inspiration for a global collective of underground artists. The raw, liberating energy of post-wall Berlin attracted creators from all over the world, who came to express themselves within the city’s public spaces.
Urban art, an umbrella term within street culture, draws on influences from graffiti, skateboarding, punk rock, street art, and hip-hop. Heavily shaped by youth movements, urban art reflects anarchic values like rebellion, revolution, and innovation.
