Circle Culture Gallery’s in-house art historian Cara Lea explores why provenance and documentation matter through available works by Damien Hirst and Gottfried Helnwein.
Every artwork tells a story. The image is only one part of it. The other part is its history.
For collectors, art provenance is one of the most important factors when assessing a work. It shows where a piece comes from, who has owned it and how its history can be traced. Clear provenance creates confidence, protects authenticity and supports the long-term value of an artwork.
A strong provenance usually begins with the gallery that first represents the work. A reputable gallery documents the sale, issues invoices and certificates and maintains a clear connection between the artist and the collector. Signed and numbered editions, Certificates of Authenticity, valuation documents and, where available, catalogue raisonnés all become part of the artwork’s history.
Buying through an established gallery offers more than a secure purchase. It creates a documented chain of ownership that stays with the artwork throughout its life. This documentation can become essential for insurance, museum loans, resale and future collectors.

Damien Hirst, For the Love of God – Wonder, 2007

Few images are as closely connected to Damien Hirst as For the Love of God. In 2007, Hirst presented his platinum cast of a human skull covered with 8,601 diamonds. It became one of the defining works of his career and one of the most widely discussed artworks in contemporary art.
According to Hirst, the title was inspired by his mother’s reaction to one of his early works:
“For the love of God, what are you going to do next?”
Created in the same year, For the Love of God – Wonder translates this famous image into a screenprint finished with glaze and diamond dust. The dark background gives the skull a strong presence while its surface reflects the light and changes as the viewer moves around it.
The present work is signed and numbered 58/250 from an edition of 250, with 10 Artist’s Proofs. It was acquired from The Drang Gallery in Burford, Oxfordshire in 2024.
The work comes with the original gallery invoice, a Certificate of Valuation dated 7 March 2024 and written confirmation from the gallery regarding the edition’s authentication documentation. It is currently held in a private collection in Hamburg, Germany.

Golden Age I and Golden Age II belong to Gottfried Helnwein’s best-known editions. Together they form a rare diptych exploring the contrast between symbols of childhood and dark popular culture.
Both works feature Marilyn Manson wearing Mickey Mouse ears. In Golden Age I, he appears with black gothic makeup against a dark background. Golden Age II mirrors the composition with white makeup and a bright background. Seen together, the works create a striking dialogue between light and darkness, innocence and rebellion.
Helnwein is internationally recognised for his work across hyperrealist painting, photography and performance. His collaboration with Marilyn Manson has been exhibited internationally and remains one of his most recognisable bodies of work.
The present diptych consists of two Limited Edition Fine Art Prints from the exceptionally small edition of 33. Both works were purchased directly through the official Helnwein Art Store on 23 January 2018 from Cyril Helnwein.
The diptych comes with the original invoice and the Studio Helnwein Certificate of Authenticity signed by Cyril Helnwein. Its provenance can be traced directly from the official studio to the present private collection.
