Julien Saudubray was born in Paris in 1985. He currently lives and works in Brussels. After graduating from the École nationale supérieure des beaux arts de Paris in 2012 in François Boisrond’s studio, the artist has since exhibited in various European countries, as well as in Brazil and the United States.
His work has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, notably at institutions such as FRAC Nord-pas-de-Calais, in Los Angeles with Anna Zorina gallery and in London with COB gallery.
He is currently represented by Waldburger Wouters in Brussels, Ketabi Bourdet in Paris and Valerius in Luxembourg.
Having experimented with what he calls the mobility of painting and its multiple applications, Julien Saudubray today synthesizes his experiments into a practice he defines as mechanistic. By reducing subjectivity to a minimum through the methodical application of transparent layers of color, he evacuates the subject from the painting to reveal its internal structure. By revealing the traces and errors that make up its architecture through repeated motifs, the painting is seen more as temporality in action than the desire to make an image.
With each brushstroke, I oscillate between ecstasy and boredom, observing myself painting like an absurd machine programmed to a Beckettian formula:
“miss again, miss better”.
Saudubray’s work is currently also featured in ‘Beyond the lines’ at the Boghossian foundation in Villa Empain. This exhibition focuses on the works and research of artists who were Residents at the Villa Empain and whose preferred practice involves the line and drawing.
As the fourth and last artist to exhibit in the new NUCLEUS project by Circle Culture Gallery, Julien Saudubray presents his work “Growing #28”. The French artist based in Brussels, is known for his unique approach to painting that revolves around layering and deconstructing the traditional elements of the art form.
