JURIT(* 1978) lives and works in Leipzig (GER)
His paintings often start with an aesthetic fascination for specific paintings and sketches of the renaissance or baroque times. During the process he changes their “aggregate state” and brings them into a “different dimension”, transferring them into “the Age of Emojis” (Wolfgang Ullrich). A first fast sketch on canvas develops into a steady transformation of the painting as the painting process goes on, so one thing that is “fascinating about these works (and what the viewer will never know), is how many iterations are layered underneath their final form” (Saša Bogojev).
In the series of entanglamentos, for example, JURIT begins with sketches of paintings by Rubens, Caravaggio, and Titian, which in themselves are connected by topic, composition, and color. Then he starts playing with the composition which leads to a kind of reduction or dramatization of some basic elements in the originals. This is accompanied by the color game, building up the body of paint layer by layer until a certain intensity is reached. And then there is his improvisation on the symbolic content, on the figures and their relation to each other. Here, too, JURIT tries to reach a certain equilibrium of complexity and simplicity which brings the cognitive and emotional aspects to oscillate in strange and interesting ways.
In 2023, JURIT has been part of the group exhibitions JOY (District Court Leipzig, April 20 – June 30), The Flesh and the Answer (AOAPC, London, May 25 – June 10), and the Duo Show HISTORY:RELOADED (BetterGoSouth Berlin; with Filippo Cegani). Back in the Day he was a sociologist and received his PhD at the University of Leipzig in 2014 with a work on the concept of freedom in social theory.

Am Anfang seiner Bilder steht oft eine ästhetische Faszination für bestimmte Gemälde und Skizzen der Renaissance oder des Barock. Während des Prozesses verändert er deren “Aggregatzustand” und bringt sie in eine “andere Dimension”, versetzt sie in “das Zeitalter der Emojis” (Wolfgang Ullrich). Aus einer ersten schnellen Skizze auf der Leinwand entwickelt sich im Laufe des Malprozesses eine stetige Verwandlung des Bildes, so dass etwas “Faszinierendes an diesen Arbeiten (und was der Betrachter nie erfahren wird) ist, wie viele Iterationen sich unter ihrer endgültigen Form schichten” (Saša Bogojev).
In der Serie der Entanglamentos zum Beispiel beginnt JURIT mit Skizzen von Gemälden von Rubens, Caravaggio und Tizian, die an sich durch Thema, Komposition und Farbe miteinander verbunden sind. Dann beginnt er mit der Komposition zu spielen, was zu einer Art Reduktion oder Dramatisierung einiger Grundelemente der Originale führt. Dazu kommt das Farbenspiel, bei dem er den Farbkörper Schicht für Schicht aufbaut, bis eine bestimmte Intensität erreicht ist. Und dann ist da noch seine Improvisation über den symbolischen Gehalt, über die Figuren und ihre Beziehung zueinander. Auch hier versucht JURIT, ein gewisses Gleichgewicht von Komplexität und Einfachheit zu erreichen, das die kognitiven und emotionalen Aspekte auf seltsame und interessante Weise in Schwingung bringt.
Im Jahr 2023 war JURIT Teil der Gruppenausstellungen JOY (Landgericht Leipzig, 20. April – 30. Juni), The Flesh and the Answer (AOAPC, London, 25. Mai – 10. Juni) und der Duoshow HISTORY:RELOADED (BetterGoSouth Galerie, Berlin; mit Filippo Cegani). Früher war er Soziologe und promovierte 2014 an der Universität Leipzig mit einer Arbeit über den Begriff der Freiheit in der Gesellschaftstheorie.
